Factoid 209 – 144 Seasons! (Summary)

Date: 7/13/14

We walked through college football by centuries, decades, and then by individual school profiles; we discovered some interesting things, which we will summarize over the next few weeks. (Not quite sure what we are talking about? Hit the PRE arrow above and enjoy!)

Some National Championship Totals:

  • Total National Championships: 350
(Up until the start of the BCS title game championships were picked by polls.)

  • Claimed by School: 241
(Schools choose which National Championships to recognize. Why you wouldn’t recognize all of them is beyond us.)

  • Retroactive: 128
(The concept of polls did not appear until 1901. However, various sporting polls and historians have assigned “retroactive” National Championships.)

  • Consensus: 82
(Consensus National Champions were awarded by virtue of their selection from 1950 onward by one or more selectors from the Associated Press, UPI, Football Writers Association of America, NFF/College Football Hall of Fame, and USA Today.)

Wins/Losses/Ties Totals:
  • Wins: 73,900
  • Losses: 58,499
  • Ties: 4,847
  • 73,000 > 58,399 + 4,847 ?
(Apparently the concept of scheduling non FBS (Division 1) Schools has been around for a while. However, some of this is also due to schools moving up to the FBS and some schools dropping out of the FBS.)
