Ohio Bobcat Louie Zervos led the country in field goals last year. He made 29 out of 35 field goals. He was 35 for 38 in extra points made. Overall, he had 122 points last season.
Auburn’s Daniel Carlson (the kicker in the teaser picture) was second with 28 fields goals on 32 attempts. Last season Daniel also kicked 44 extra points for an overall point total of 128. Daniel has never missed an extra point attempt. Idaho’s Austin Rehkow was third with 26 field goals made. Louie and Daniel are returning to their schools, but Austin was a senior and will not be returning.
Field goals made in a season is a dubious stat, because it means your team has a hard time scoring touchdowns and converting third downs. Austin Rehkow’s name does not appear on any mock draft board. The number one ranked kicker heading into the 2017 NFL Draft is Arizona State’s Zane Gonzalez. Zane is projected to be a fifth or sixth round draft pick. This doesn’t mean Austin can’t make an NFL team; undrafted kickers make NFL teams on a regular basis. It should be noted the average NFL kicker makes two million dollars a year and can play well into their early forties.
