Coach Albert Herrnstein was the first OSU coach to win a conference championship. He won the Ohio Athletic Conference in 1906 with an 8-1 record, their only loss of 0-6 being vs. Michigan.

Hernstein coached Ohio State from 1906 to 1909. He amassed a 28-10-1 record over that time period. He would finish 2nd twice and 3rd once but never would repeat his rookie season success.

Hernstein would be the most successful coach in Ohio State history until Coach John Wilce came along. Ohio State was Hernstein’s last coaching job. He then went on to own and run a hardware store; Hernstein Hardware Co. in Chillicothe, Ohio.
