Profile of the 1881 Michigan Wolverines football team from The Palladium
The Michigan Wolverines lead the pack with 915 victories, the Yale Bulldogs are second with 879, the Texas Longhorns and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are tied at third with 876 wins a piece, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers are in fifth with 867 wins.*
Longevity of your program helps you get on the list; how your program has developed over the years will help you stay on the list. All of these programs started and had significant seasons before 1900: Michigan (1879), Yale (1872), Texas (1893), Notre Dame (1887), and Nebraska (1890).
Yale was a powerhouse in the first 50 years of college football, over the years they lost their influence on college football, and eventually moved to Division II A. Yale will eventually continue moving down this list as they only play 10 regular season games and a possible bowl game, while the Division I schools play 12 to 13 with the power houses almost always in a Bowl game. Time is not on Yale’s side for this, but as an academic powerhouse, you would imagine this is not that important to them.
