Frank Thomas was the first Alabama football coach to be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. He was part of the 1951 inaugural class of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Frank Thomas was head coach for Chattanooga from 1925 to 1928. From 1929 to 1930 he was the backfield coach for Georgia. In 1931 he was hired as Alabama’s head football coach and would coach there until 1946.

At Alabama Coach Thomas would win two National Championships (1934 and 1941) and four SEC titles. His record at Alabama was 115–24–7. He went 4-2 in Bowl Games. In 1945 he was named coach of the year for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

At the end of the 1946 season he resigned due to health issues and having to take care of his mentally ill daughter.
