In 1921 there were 102 teams playing Division 1 football. There were various national champions, demonstrating the conundrum of college football of no clear champion, a conundrum that would last for over a 100 years.
Only California, Cornell, and Lafayette claim national championships for the 1921 season. That season had three bowl games: Rose Bowl; Dixie Classic; and the San Diego Christmas Classic. The Rose Bowl saw its first African American play.
