Charlie Calhoun holds the record for the most punting yards in a game. Charlie played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He set the record vs. Centenary (LA) on November 11, 1939. The teams played to a 0-0 tie, and Calhoun set the record with 1,318 yards.

A torrential downpour and muddy field conditions prevented regular strategies from being used. Instead, both teams would punt, hoping the other team would fumble the punt, thereby ensuring good field position. This strategy did not work, as neither team managed to score.
