In 1893 in the Army-Navy game. Midshipman Joseph M. Reeves wore a crude leather helmet. A local shoemaker/blacksmith made it. Reeves wore it after being warned by doctors that he risked death if he continued to play football after suffering a kick to the head in an earlier game.
The game was played in Annapolis, Maryland. Navy won the game 6-4.
