The Oklahoma Sooners hold this winning streak by winning 58 straight games from 1953 to 1957. Bud Wilkinson was the coach during this streak. Ironically, in 1954 Oklahoma was not chosen the National Champion. (The College Football Playoffs should have started a long time ago.)
The winning streak started with a 19-14 win over Texas. That was the Sooners’ third game of the season, and they had yet to win. The Sooners lost to Notre Dame 28-21 in the season opener and the next week tied Pittsburgh 7-7. With a 1-1-1 start to the season, who could have predicted the Sooners next loss would be in 1957.
The streak ended on November 16, 1957 with a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame. Notre Dame was coached by Terry Brenan, had two loses going into this game, and would finish the season with a 7-3 record. Hardly the type of team you would expect to end Oklahoma’s winning streak.
Along the way Oklahoma would claim two National Championships in 1955 and 1956, although they could have easily claimed more if they wanted to, as various polls had them as National Champions in 1953 and 1957. The next longest streak is Washington with a 40 game winning streak from 1908 to 1914.
