No one won the National Championship in 1871. This is because there were no games played in 1871. There were only three teams playing football back then: Rutgers; Princeton; and Columbia. Because it was new sport, scheduling was difficult, so they couldn’t figure out the scheduling in 1871. 1871 is truly an incongruent football season.

How hard is it to schedule three games? LOL. Unfortunately, there is no one left alive to ask how it felt not having college football. 1872 would see a new season and two more teams playing football: Yale and Stevens Tech. A total of five games were played with Princeton and Yale sharing (retroactively) the National Championship.
