Center and linebacker Chuck Bednarik of the University of Pennsylvania was the first pick in the 1949 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles.
While at Penn Chuck played the full 60 minutes and excelled at both offense and defense. He was three time All-American. He won the Maxwell award in 1948*.
He played in the NFL for 14 years; all of which were for the Eagles. He was an 8 time Pro-Bowl selection. He is both in the College Football Hall of Fame and in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
