The broadcast of the College Football Playoff final holds the record for the most watched cable show/broadcast ever. The game generated an 18.5 rating, which is the highest rating ever according to Adweek.

While these are good numbers for cable, putting games on cable does limit audiences. For example the highest rated “final” ever was the 2006 USC vs. Texas matchup, which drew 35.6 million viewers. Monday’s Championship game drew around 33 million.

The NFL still is king. The Green Bay vs. Dallas playoff game Sunday drew 44.4 million viewers, while the Super Bowl can easily draw 100 million.
