Quarterback JaMarcus Russell from LSU was the first pick of the 2007 NFL Draft. JaMarcus was drafted by the Oakland Raiders.

JaMarcus started at Quarterback for two years in college. His junior year he threw for 3,129 yards, 28 TDs, and only eight interceptions. He also won the Manning Award his junior year and was named to the all-SEC first team.

JaMarcus decided to enter the draft instead of coming back for his senior year. NFL scouts were particularly intrigued by his size, he is 6’6” tall and at the time weighed 300 lbs, but they were most impressed with his arm strength. The fact that the Raiders chose him as the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft was a surprise to no one.

JaMarcus Russel is one of the biggest busts in NFL history. He played or the Raiders for three years and has a passer rating of 65.2 over his NFL career. He threw five more interceptions (23) than touchdowns (18). It didn’t help that the Oakland Raiders were lousy also, although other teams gave him the chance in the NFL after his release from the Raiders, but it never panned out.

JaMarcus did walk away with a 31.5 million dollar signing bonus. Good for him!
