Factoid 412 - Who has the 6th best all time Wonderlic score for an NFL Prospect?

Date: 3/1/15

Greg McElroy, QB for Alabama, scored a 43 on the Wonderlic, which earned him the honor of the 6th best score on this test in NFL history. McElroy played for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2007 to 2010. He started his last two years and won the BCS National Championship his senior year. His teams were very good, but as a quarterback he was not even the best in the SEC when he played.

“The Wonderlic is a 50-question test administered to all combine participants that measures cognitive ability. The time limit is 12 minutes. A score of 20 is indicative of ‘average’ intelligence and roughly equivalent to an IQ of 100. Apr 12, 2014.” - ESPN

McElroy was selected by the New York Jets in the 7th round with the 208th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He played for the Jets from 2011 to 2013 seeing limited action. He is no longer in football. McElroy graduated with a 3.85 GPA in undergrad and went on to earn a Master of Science degree in sports management with a 4.0 GPA. He is very smart and will do well.

Did the high Wonderlic score predict success in the NFL? Well, McElroy did not have the physical talent, which is also a requirement to play in the NFL. So in this case the Wonderlic was irrelevant, as he did not have the physical talent, but I wouldn’t worry about Greg. Maybe someday he will be the NFL commissioner? A job that pays $40 million per year.
