Painting of the 1869 Princeton Football Team

Football started in the Ivy Leagues in 1869 and the Ivy Leagues dominated college football for the first fifty or so years. Princeton has the most National Championships with 28, Yale is second with 27, and Alabama is third with 16.

While Alabama is 12 Championships away from Princeton, someday they may surpass it, but Princeton and Yale will never win anymore “Division One” National Championships as they no longer compete at that level, but in a lower division.

Princeton retroactively won the 1869 College Football National Championship. It was the first year of college football and there were only two teams: Princeton and Rutgers, both teams went 1-1 that year. Rutgers won the first game that year 6-4, while Princeton won the second game 8-0. The rules were considerably different back then.
