Quarterback David Carr from Fresno State was the first pick of the 2002 NFL Draft. David was drafted by the Houston Texans.

David Carr would only start his last two years of college, but Fresno State would have its day his senior year. David had good numbers his junior year, but had a spectacular senior season. His senior year Carr threw for 4,839 yards, 46 TDs, and only nine interceptions. His team went 11-3, but more impressively beat three BCS teams: Colorado, Oregon State, and Wisconsin, only to fall to two conference opponents Boise State and Hawaii, although they were very close games.

Ultimately, his senior season would end with a 35-44 loss to Michigan State, but still impressive that Fresno State could play with the big boys. David’s senior year he won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Sammy Baugh Trophy, the 2001 WAC Offensive Player of the Year, and finished fifth in the Heisman. Most certainly he showed he was worthy of being the first pick based on his play in college.

David was unlucky to be chosen as the Houston Texans first pick as Houston was a first year expansion team. During his time with the Texans he spent a lot of time getting sacked, for instance 49 times in 2004. Injuries and ineffective play plagued him after he was traded in 2007. He played as a backup until the 2012 season for the Panthers, Giants, and 49ers.

He had an eleven-year career that some consider a big bust, which is true, but to say his career wasn’t cut short by being on a lousy team like Houston is also true. On the other hand, Houston should have traded down a spot to get Julius Peppers and a draft choice, Peppers would have greatly contributed to the Texans defense, and Carr could have been given a better chance on a more established team.
