This week’s Titans Clash asks which major college sport has the best playoff system: basketball (men’s and women’s); football; baseball; men’s soccer; or men’s hockey.

Basketball has March Madness, which is a 64 team single elimination tournament with automatic bids for all the conferences and a tournament selection committee to determine the other teams and seeding. (The field has actually expanded to 68 with some play in games.) It is the same for both men’s and women’s basketball. Football has moved to a four team single elimination playoff with teams and seeding chosen by a committee. This week’s Titans Clash asks which major college sport has the best playoff system: basketball (men’s and women’s); football; baseball; men’s soccer; or men’s hockey.

Baseball has a 64 team playoff with automatic bids for conference champs, while the remaining teams and seeding are determined by a committee. It has four tiers of competition, each contested on a double elimination basis. In fact, throughout the entire tournament a team can lose a total of four games and still be crowned champions. Men’s soccer has a 48 team single elimination tournament. There are some automatic bids with the remaining teams selected by a committee, which also seeds the teams for the tournament. This week’s Titans Clash asks which major college sport has the best playoff system: basketball (men’s and women’s); football; baseball; men’s soccer; or men’s hockey.

Men’s ice hockey has a 16 team single elimination format. There are some automatic bids with the remaining teams selected by a committee, which also seeds the teams for the tournament. To the casual fan, you might be a bit surprised as the most familiar thing about college men’s ice hockey is the Frozen Four; however, the Frozen Four is just the name for the semi-finals in this tournament. This week’s Titans Clash asks which major college sport has the best playoff system: basketball (men’s and women’s); football; baseball; men’s soccer; or men’s hockey.

Quite interesting: mathematically baseball has the most chance of the “best” team coming out on top. On the other hand, single elimination tournaments have the most drama: one and done. A small field, like football, limits the excitement. Some of this is also sport specific, based on the grueling nature of each respective sport; for instance, football adopting baseball’s format would be insanity and impractical. This week’s Titans Clash asks which major college sport has the best playoff system: basketball (men’s and women’s); football; baseball; men’s soccer; or men’s hockey.

We think for football a 16 team single elimination tournament would be ideal, much like hockey, which hockey fans love. Which one do we think is better? Well, we are going to cop-out and say football has the worst system and the rest are good and ideal for their sport. Your thoughts? Please comment via the link below.
