Stanford Cardinal’s running back Christian McCaffrey is sitting out the Hyundai Sun Bowl vs. the North Carolina Tar Heels. McCaffery has been a prolific runner, receiver, and special team’s player of the Cardinal amassing 32 TDs, 3,915 yards rushing, and 1,213 yards receiving over his college career. Likewise, Leonard Fournette is sitting out the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl vs. the Louisville Cardinals. Fournette has been a prolific running back for the LSU Tigers amassing 42 TDs, 3,830 yards rushing, and 526 yards receiving.

There has been debate as to whether this is the right thing to do. One side says yes, why risk an injury and ruin your chances at an NFL career. The other side says no, a player should play for his team period.

What are your thoughts? Should they or shouldn’t they play?

Faniacs wants to chime in on this as well. First of all it should be pointed out both players are running backs, as such they are hit the most in a game and so are the most likely to get injured. On paper it makes sense to sit this out. Why risk it?

On the other hand, is there an upside to playing? What if one of them has a record shattering performance that vaults them up into the top draft pick positions? This happened to Ezekiel Elliot. For instance being the fourth pick is worth around 24 million, but being the last first round pick is worth around 8 million, so is it worth sitting out? Hard to tell, but there is an upside to playing your bowl game, a potentially huge upside.
