Quarterback Michael Vick from Virginia Tech was the first pick of the 2001 NFL Draft. Michael was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons.

Michael Vick was a redshirted freshmen who came on with a bang his first season that he played. In his “freshmen year – 1999” Vick finished third in the Heisman voting, passed for 2,065 yards, ran for 682 yards, scored nine touchdowns, and passed for 13 TDs. He was good his senior year as well but injuries hampered his season, although he finished strong beating Clemson in the Toyota Gator Bowl and winning the bowl’s MVP award.

Vick left college early for economic reasons and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. Vick was on his way to becoming a NFL super star when he was convicted of dog fighting. Due to incarceration he missed two NFL seasons and came back to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, then the New York Jets, and now the Pittsburgh Steelers as a back-up. When his career ends it will have been a good career, but also one where you have to wonder what could have been?
