Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, or Cardale Jones; who is the better quarterback? (Titans Clash - #63)
The Ohio State University Buckeyes had the most unlikely road to the National Championship: they lost their starting Heisman Trophy Candidate QB, Braxton Miller, nine days before the start of last season due an injury, and he would be out all season. His replacement, J.T. Barrett, put together a stellar season and was in contention to win the Heisman; however, he also went down due to injury in the last regular game of the season. His replacement, Cardale Jones, came in and had a stellar three games on the way to the National Championship. Coach Urban Meyer will have to decide who the starter is, but our question is, who is the better quarterback?
Braxton Miller started as quarterback from 2011 to 2013. He is a two time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He is 6’ 2”, weights 215, and is very fast. Over his career he has thrown for 5,292 yards and 52 touchdowns with 17 interceptions. He has run for 3,054 yards and 32 touchdowns. His spiral is not the prettiest.
J.T. Barrett beat out Cardale Jones in the fall of last year for the starting QB job. J.T. is 6’1” and is relatively fast but not as fast as Braxton. Braxton was a redshirted freshman, and 2014 was the first time he played. Over 12 games he amassed 2,834 yards passing with 34 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. He rushed for 938 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is not as fast as Braxton but is a better passer with a nicer looking spiral. He led Ohio State to an 11-1 record, until he was hurt toward the end of the Michigan game.
Cardale Jones stepped in as starting QB when J.T. went down. It looked like OSU’s chances of making the playoffs were slim. Cardale, however, engineered a 59-0 destruction of Wisconsin, which lead to the Buckeyes being selected to the first ever College Football Playoffs. Cardale went on to win the two playoff games and the National Championship. Impressive for someone who had never started in college.
Cardale Jones is 6’5” and weighs 250 pounds. In his brief career at Ohio State he threw for 863 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. He has rushed for 424 yards and two touchdowns. He is the slowest of the three quarterbacks, although he has a clear advantage in short yardage situations, where he can just bulldozer defenders. He has by far the best arm; actually, you could call his arm a rocket. His spiral is beautiful, very accurate on his passes, and he can launch the long ball. He is the best passer of the three.
So who is the better quarterback of the three? We say it is Cardale; Braxton is probably the best athlete of the three. However, throwing the ball is paramount as QB, and Cardale is just that much better. Cardale is the better QB. He is the better passer by far, can read plays, and is dangerous enough as a runner.
