Titans Clash - #4 - Joe Namath vs. Joe Montana

12/12/13-Author: Tali
Who would you rather have as your college quarterback: Joe Namath or Joe Montana?

Joe Namath played for Coach Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide from 1962 to 1964. He won a national championship in 1964, despite losing 21 to 17 to Texas in the Orange Bowl. (Again, same old same old; VOTE to change this.) He was 29 – 4 as a starter. His full stats are below. He was one of the first true mobile quarterbacks and significantly changed the way the position was played.

Joe Montana was recruited by and played for Ara Parseghian and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish; however, Coach Parseghian retired after Joe’s first season (Joe did not play that year) and Dan Devine took over, so Joe’s tenure was mostly under Coach Devine. In 1977 Notre Dame went 11 -1 and won the national title, not having lost a game while Joe was the quarterback. Montana was 17 – 3 as a starter for the Irish; he did not start until the fourth game of his junior season, which seems odd now, given how his pro career turned out. His trademark in college was his ability to foster the dramatic comeback, the most memorable one being against the University of Houston his senior year in the Cotton Bowl: trailing 34 -12 with 7:37 remaining, he led his team to a 35 to 34 victory.
