Berwenger Jackson
First Heisman Trophy Winner Jay Berwanger and 2016 Heisman Trophy Winner Lamar Jackson

Jay Berwanger won the first Heisman Trophy in 1935. Jay Berwanger was a half-back for the University of Chicago, which was a Big Ten School at the time. (Chicago eventually left Division One football to play at a lower level.) Lamar Jackson is the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner. Lamar Jackson plays QB for the Louisville Cardinals and is a sophomore. We thought it would be interesting to compare some stats:

Jay Berwanger Lamar Jackson
Weight 6’ 1” 6’ 3”
Height 195 lbs 205 lbs
Career Yards Rushing 1,839 2,498
Career Rushing TDs 22 32
Career Yards Passing 921 5,230
Career Passing TDs Not available 42
Career Extra Points 20 0

So who was a better player? Who knows. Times were different and it is impossible to compare that long ago with today.

There were also differences in the game itself: in 1935 the half back also could very well be your kicker as Jay was; they played less games back then (Chicago - Berwanger’s school - played eight games in 1935, while Clemson - Deshaun’s school - played 13); and passing was not as a prevalent as it is today. Passing stats will be much lower from 1935 then today's high powered air-attacks, still interesting to compare the stats even though the game was much different then.
