Do you take Marcus Mariota over Jameis Winston in the 2015 NFL Draft?

We have addressed this before. (See http://www.collegefootballfaniacs.com/Blog71.html.) However, recently it was learned Mariota scored better than Winston on the Wonderlic, 33 vs. 27. So does this change people’s thoughts?

The thought process in picking Jameis first is that he has a better arm and understands the pro style offenses. Mariota has not played in this type of offense but in the Chip Kelly spread offense. It appears most NFL scouts think that is a big deal and therefore are predicting Winston is taken first.

We at Faniacs think differently. Mariota is smarter, more mature, and has the physical skills. We are more than confident he has the smarts, dedication, and maturity to make it in the NFL. The flip side of that is that Jameis is immature and makes poor decisions, off and on the field. Will Jameis magically mature?

Last year the first pick in the draft: Jadeveon Clowney DE Houston Texans signed a 4 year contract with $22.272M fully guaranteed and a $14.518M signing bonus. The first QB taken in the draft: Blake Bortles QB Jacksonville Jaguars signed a 4 years contract with $20.6M fully guaranteed. That is a lot of money.

So as a GM, do you take a chance on Jameis Winston? Do you assume he will mature? We at Faniacs would not. It would be a poor decision to draft Jameis first or second. If you have the first pick, trade it to someone who wants Winston, then secure the 2nd pick and draft Mariota. That is what we would do.
