Should football players be able to major in football?

We have been reading the book "The Opening Kickoff: The Tumultuous Birth of a Football Nation.” It covers the period of approximately 1890 to 1915 in college football. Apparently, scandals both monetary and regarding eligibility, have been going on since the 1890s. Also, the continuous struggle with football and college: how much football is too much? Football players are student athletes and also money makers for their schools.

At the age of 18 a large portion of our population opts to go to college. While a few are there to become enlightened, most are there to learn a career, graduate, get a good job, and live the American dream. Wouldn’t a career in football do that? The course could be historical study of games and strategies, nutritional science, finances, some business course, etc. If the major offers a career path? Why not?

What do you think? We would love to hear your opinion?
