Georgia Bulldog Herschel Walker was one of the great running backs of all time in college as well as a very good NFL player. Jameis Winston had an epic red shirt freshman year leading the Florida State Seminoles to a National Championship. Who had the better freshman year?

In 1980 Herschel Walker had one of the most epic years for a running back, let alone a freshmen. He ran for 1,616 yards, which is a 5.9 yards per carry, and had 15 touchdowns. He caught some passes and returned some kicks as well, but primarily it was his running that stood out.

His Bulldogs went 12-0 in 1980 and won the National Championship. In the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship he rushed 36 times for 150 yards despite dislocating his left shoulder very early in the game.

In 2013 Jameis Winston threw for 4,057 yards and 40 touchdowns in 40 games. His Florida State Seminoles more or less coasted to the BCS National Championship game. There Auburn gave them a fight, but Florida State prevailed 34-31.

Jameis completed 20 of 35 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns in the 2014 BCS National Championship game. He was named MVP.

So who had the better freshman year? Herschel’s rushing numbers do not even rank him in the top 100. Jameis’ passing numbers put him in the 73rd best all time. However, it should be noted that in college well balanced and good teams do rely on just one player, whereas a lesser teams may rely on the super stars, and statistics backs this up.

Herschel was a beast as a freshmen, ready for the NFL, so we are saying Herschel. He had the better freshman year but not by much. Both seasons were very impressive.
