Major Applewhite played quarterback for the Texas Longhorns from 1998 to 2001. An injury forced him to the sidelines in 2000, which resulted in his backup Chris Simms securing the starting position. In Major’s senior year he was the backup QB.
Major threw for 8,353 yards, 60 TDs, and 28 interceptions over his career with Texas. He was a pocket passer and had negative rushing yards in college. The Patriots signed Major as an undrafted free agent, but Major quit before camp to finish his degree and pursue a career in coaching.
Major has been coaching since 2003, but never as a head coach. Tom Herman took the head coaching position with the University of Texas thereby leaving a head coaching vacancy at Houston. On December 9, 2016, Applewhite was promoted by the University of Houston to be their 14th head coach. Let’s see how he does!
