P.J. Fleck vs. Tom Herman: who takes another job first?

Tom Herman was last year’s new coach on the scene and darling, but this year it is P.J. Fleck. Let’s compare the two. They are both the new coaches on the block and young: Herman is 41 and Fleck is 35.

Tom Herman played at Cal Lutheran as a receiver. He is in his second year as Head Coach of the Houston Cougars. His record as head coach is 20-3 and 1-0 in Bowl Games. He was an assistant coach for seven different schools:

1998 - Texas Lutheran (WR)
1999–2000 - Texas (Graduate Assistant)
2001–2004 - Sam Houston State (WR/ST)
2005–2006 - Texas State (OC/QB)
2007–2008 - Rice (OC/QB)
2009–2011 - Iowa State (OC/QB)
2012–2014 - Ohio State (OC/QB)
2015–present – Houston

Tom’s offensive genius led the Buckeyes to National Championship in 2014; this got him “noticed” and hired by Houston. In his second season, he is learning it is not always so easy.

P.J. Fleck played at Northern Illinois as a receiver and played in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers from 2004 to 2005. He is in his fourth season as Head Coach of the Western Michigan Broncos. His record as head coach is 26-21 and 1-1 in Bowl Games. He was an assistant coach for four different schools and one NFL Team: .

2006 - Ohio State (Graduate Assistant)
2007–2008 - Northern Illinois (WR)
2009 - Northern Illinois (WR/RC)
2010–2011 - Rutgers (WR)
2012 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (WR)

As GA he was on the Ohio State Team that went to the National Championship, but lost. It has taken P.J. longer to get the Broncos going, but he had much less to start with.

Both P.J. and Tom are up and coming in the coaching ranks. Which one of them takes a job somewhere else first? There should be openings at Notre Dame, USC, Texas, and Georgia this year. All stellar programs and all should have openings?

We say both leave this year. The money will be too big and you have to jump while you are hot.
