LaDainian Tomlinson played for the TCU Horned Frogs from 1997 to 2000. His carries and production significantly increased from his sophomore year to his junior year; going from 144 carries for 717 yards his sophomore year to 304 carries for 1.974 yards his junior year.

LaDainian led the country in rushing both his junior and senior years. His senior year he carried the ball 369 times for 2,158 yards. Over his college he carried the ball 943 times for 5,387 yards and 56 TDs. He also had 267 yards receiving over his college career, but he was used sparingly as a receiver. (In contrast how he would be used in the NFL.) The San Diego Charges selected Tomlinson as the fifth overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft.

The players selected ahead of LaDainian in the 2001 NFL Draft had good careers: Michael Vick (QB); Leonard Davis (G); Gerard Warren (DT); and Justin Smith (DE), but not Hall of Fame Careers. LaDainian had 13,684 yards rushing and 145 rushing TDs over his NFL career, as well as 4,772 receiving yards and 17 TD receptions. He is a five-time Pro-Bowler and the 2006 NFL MVP, which is rare now-a-days as usually a quarterback wins MVP. He is in the College Football Hall of Fame and is to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as member of the 2017 Hall of Fame class.
