Each team has had one player picked first in the NFL Draft, so the teams are tied in this category. TCU’s Center Ki Aldrich was the first overall pick in 1939. Ki was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals. He went on to play seven years in the NFL and was in the Pro Bowl twice.

In 1938* Ki was selected All-American and his team went 11-0 to win the National Championship. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Baylor’s Wide Receiver Lawrence Elkins was the first overall pick in the 1965 AFL Draft and 10th in the NFL draft. The Houston Oilers picked Elkins in the AFL Draft and the Green Bay Packers picked him in the NFL draft. For our purposes we are counting both leagues as being the “NFL” draft.

Elkins was a two time All American and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. His NFL career was brief.

* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
